Memory Verse Challenge: Week 21

Good Tuesday morning to you all.  I hope and pray you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

This week's verse is from one of David's many songs of praises. This one happens to come from the book of 2 Samuel verse 22.  I recommend reading the whole chapter.  It's hard not to get caught up in David's words and to feel encouraged by how awesome God is.  He reaches down from heaven, protects us, defends us and touches us with His amazing greatness and love.

How often do we take time to praise God like David did?  It's something I know I need to work on.  Maybe memorizing this verse will help us remember there is NO OTHER like our God.

Sunday Blogvotional: A Love Filled Prayer

"Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. John 17:24

We see throughout the Bible that prayer is like our lifeline to God.  It connects us in a way that's unique and special.  Through prayer, we can truly communicate with God about our feelings, desires, questions and struggles.   Sometimes our prayers are simple and yet there are times when our prayers come out of the depths of our souls.

In the gospel of John, we read of one such time for Jesus.  He was in anguish; about to be arrested, tried and crucified.  The time of His death was near and He spent what little time He had left in prayer with His Father.  In the midst of His own struggle He prayed for Himself but He also took the time to pray a passion-filled prayer about you and me.

In John chapter 17 we get the pleasure of hearing Jesus' words of longing for us.  His true desire is for us to be with Him in Heaven and for us to have the joy of seeing the magnificent glory of God.  Jesus' prayer demonstrates the depth of His love for us and gives us a great example of how we should pray for others.  Loving someone means praying for them.   Jesus did that for us in the garden of Gethsemane and He continues to pray for us today. What a blessing!

Encouragement for the week:  Read John chapter 17.  There is nothing so personal as someone's prayer.  We are given such a huge blessing by being able to have an open window into the heart of Jesus.  He loves us deeply.  Spend some time reflecting on that truth.

Memory Verse Challenge: Week 20

Have you ever felt like you haven't fully reached your potential?  The truth is - you haven't.  But that's not a bad thing.  Our whole lives are meant to be a growth process.  If we ever get to the point where we feel we've reached the pinnacle, then what could possibly be next?  Wouldn't life become a little boring?  There would be no more challenges - no more excitement - no more growth.

This week's verse reminds us that we're a work in progress.  We were lovingly created by the One and Only True God.  And since that time, He continues to mold us and shape us day by day.  I don't know about you but I find this not only exciting, but also comforting.  He began a work in me and will not let me go until that work is done.  I may still be a little rough around the edges but I have no doubt I will become the beautiful vessel I am meant to be.

How are you doing on the challenge?  Do you have any special methods for keeping the Word of God in your heart?

Sunday Blogvotional: The Shepherd's Voice

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.  John 10:27

Have you ever studied sheep?  They aren't the smartest of animals by any stretch and yet they know, without a doubt, the voice of their shepherd. They trust their shepherd with their lives.  When he speaks, they go to him.  They rely on him wholeheartedly.  For it is through him they will get their food and be led to their safe shelter.

The Lord is our shepherd and we are His sheep.  He lovingly directs and guides us.  But our success and safety is determined by how well we listen and how well we know His voice.  In our busy lives it's hard to hear when His voice gets drowned out by all the other noises and voices around us?  How well we know His voice is determined by how much time we spend with Him (away from distractions).

If we don't know our Shepherd's voice how will we be able to distinguish between His voice and someone far less trustworthy?  Will we know which way to go or will we get lost?  Or will we simply follow the sheep next to us because we're sure it was listening?

Wisdom says we can't rely on the knowledge of other sheep in our flock.  We must be able to hear and distinguish our shepherd's voice on our own.  The direction He sends to one sheep may not be the same direction He's sending us.

Listen to the Shepherd's voice like your life depends on it because it does.

Encouragement for the week: Spend some time listening for God's voice.  The more you listen for it - the more you will recognize it when He speaks to you.  Consistently being in prayer and reading God's Word will help you learn His voice (His cadence).  Once you know His style of speaking it will be easier to recognize His voice.

Memory Verse Challenge: Week 19

Good Monday morning to you all!  I hope all you moms out there had a great Mothers' Day.

This week's verse reminds us that when we accept Jesus as our Savior, God transforms us.  He graciously gives us a new heart and a new spirit.  It may not always be immediately evident to us or to those around us but rest assured we have been renewed.

Growth and change do take time but what this verse assures us is that we have the tools with which to work.  God has given us a new heart and a new spirit.  It's our job to nurture them.  The more we let love in - the more our heart grows and the more love will flow out of us.  The more we use the spirit, namely the fruit of the spirit - the more they will expand and grow inside of us and flow out of us.

Without this wonderful transforming gift from God our hearts would remain as stone with no life or love flowing through them. But thankfully, by God's love and grace, we are made new with a "spirit of power, of love and of discipline". (MVC Week 12)
